Eyelid Treatment

There are a number of conditions in relation to your eyelids that may cause pain, inflammation, cosmetic and/or visual problems.

Please press the buttons below to be taken to the relevant information:

1. Droopy and/or heavy eyelids

Droopy and/or heavy eyelids may cause significant visual or cosmetic symptoms.  The eyelids can be lifted with various eyelid corrective surgery aimed at the cause of the problem, including ptosis repair (drooping of the upper lid) and blepharoplasties (surgical procedure to remove excess skin above eyelids).

Early detection, diagnosis and treatment is vital to ensure the risks associated with eyelid problems are minimised to reduce pain, inflammation and/or vision loss.

Our doctor’s at WA Eye Specialists offer Blepharosteam treatments, a moisture and heat therapy to help relieve resistant symptoms of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction in conditions such as posterior Blepharitis, Meibomitis, ocular Rosacea and Dry Eye syndrome.

3. Chalazion/Meibomian cyst

A chalazion/meibomian cyst looks like a small lump or nodule inside your upper or lower eyelid. They are usually a result from healed internal styes (see point 4 below) that are no longer infectious.

These cyst-like nodules form around an oil gland (meibomian) within the eyelid, resulting in red, swollen eyelids. The contents of a chalazion include blocked fatty secretions (lipids) that normally help lubricate the eye but can no longer drain out.

4. Stye (or Eyelash folliculitis)

A stye is an infection in the eyelid that causes a red, tender bump near the edge of the eyelid.

The infection is caused by bacteria and it can occur at the base of an eyelash or within one of the small oil glands within the eyelid.

5. Abnormal positions of the eyelid (Entropion and Ectropion)

Entropion (en-TROH-pee-on) is a condition in which your eyelid (usually the lower lip) folds or turns inward so that your eyelashes and skin rub against the surface of your eye, causing irritation and discomfort.

Corrective surgery with entropion repair may be required for more symptomatic cases.

Similarly Ectropion (out turning of eyelids) may cause watery eyes, cornea exposure and cosmesis concerns requiring corrective surgery with ectropion repair.

6. Eyelid tumours

Eyelid tumours may begin with inflammation on the top or the bottom of the eyelid, and have similar symptoms to cysts or styes. Eye tumours may also start out as benign skin cancers. Serious eyelid tumours may require excisional biopsy and reconstructive eyelid surgery.
